Zeal for God’s Temple
Scripture records in John 2 that Jesus was passionately disturbed by the Jews misuse of Temple area; "And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables" and "His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’" Why was Jesus so zealous about this and how should such zeal be reflected in His followers? As you consider your own imitation of Christ as a disciple, here are some things to consider;
A temple is intended to be a place of profound devotion and holiness, totally reserved for God’s glory and representing His presence on earth.
You, Christian, are to be the temple. 1 Corinthians 6:19 - "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you … So glorify God in your body." Do you really live in such a way that demonstrates that you are a dwelling place of God? Is your lifestyle such that God can abide in you?
We, collectively with other Christians, are also the temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16 - "Do you not know that you (plural) are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you (plural)? … God's temple is holy, and you (plural) are that temple." What ramifications does this concept have regarding your relationship with other Christians? With those you might naturally tend to avoid? Is your fellowship activity such that all people will know you are His disciples by the love you have for one another? Let’s live together as the dwelling place of God.
