“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” Matthew 28:18-19
“The Great Commission” that sends Christians out to evangelize the world actually derives from the recognition that “all authority” has been delegated to Christ. This is the significance of the “go therefore” part. The full authority of Jesus is exciting Good News for a number of reasons! It means He has total power over the events of history, that He can alter things to answer your prayers. Big things and little things. His power and authority extends over all other powers, even unseen spiritual entities, so there is no need to fear. It even extends to power over death! He has the power to forgive sins and to grant eternal life! He has power to sanctify us, enabling us to live in the very presence of God the Father!
All authority being given to the very love of God is incredibly Good News. Here is how it works to motivate evangelism; telling folks is the anticipated response. If you feel hunger, you eat. If something is funny, you laugh, If it itches you scratch. The anticipated response to hearing such incredibly good news is to “go therefore” and tell people.
