Spiritual Watchfulness (Vern Dale)

Alert & Attentiveness

Paying attention to ourselves, our hearts, our souls; but also paying attention to the Word. Being alert is not being fearful but allowing the word to take root and holding firmly to what we believe.

“Keep a close watch on yourself and you’re teaching. Persist in this for by doing so you will save both yourself and your hearers.”  1 Timothy 4:16

Vigilance

Trusting in God alone and protecting your heart from any intrusion. Being prepared and vigilant, with the help of the Holy Spirit, who will guide you in discernment of all truth.

“Keep the heart with all vigilance.” Proverbs 4:23

Expectancy

Having the mindset of confidently trusting and active waiting for God’s good plans, promises, and the return of Christ, rooted in faith and God’s faithfulness. Expectancy includes trusting God’s power and sovereignty in all circumstances with the belief that God is working to bring all things together for good.

In each of these components of spiritual watchfulness, prayer, studying of the word, an active faith, and your faith community are vital to your faith and possibly the faith of others.
